“He waka eke noa, mō Aotearoa whānui”
We are all in this waka together, for all the people of New Zealand
The Halberg Foundation is a charitable organisation that aims ‘To bring about moments of joy’ for physically disabled New Zealanders, by enabling active participation in sport and recreation.
Founded in 1963 by Sir Murray Halberg, the organisation’s purpose is to support Sir Murray’s vision of providing know-how, resources and opportunities for physically disabled tamariki and rangatahi to participate in sport and recreation. This provides health benefits, improved confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
The Halberg Foundation Board is seeking a new Chief Executive. This is a high-profile role that leads a small, largely Auckland-based team. Programmes and services include Regional Advisers who work with physically disabled young people. Inclusion Training supports adaptation of physical activity to enable involvement in mainstream activities, events, and programmes.
The charity’s flagship fundraising event is the Halberg Awards, Aotearoa’s pre-eminent sports awards, aimed at celebrating sporting excellence. The Foundation also hosts the Halberg Games, a national competition for physically disabled youth.
The Chief Executive is accountable for enabling the Foundation’s important mahi through strategic, people, financial and operational leadership. If appointed, you will manage a broad set of relationships and support collaboration with like-minded organisations to maximise inclusive, equitable participation opportunities. To be effective you will need:
- The capacity to ‘walk in different worlds’, working with funding partners, sponsors, politicians, business and sporting leaders, through to the whānau of disabled children
- Nuanced, energised communication and public speaking skills
- Capacity to strengthen an engaged, empowered, collaborative culture
- Ability to maximise brand equity, people, financial and other resources
- Expertise in strategy development and execution
- Authenticity, empathy and affinity with enabling physically disabled New Zealanders’ participation in sport and recreation.
