What you’ll be doing

This is an exciting opportunity to provide research leadership in the Aquatic Design and Bioengineering field.  Combining your interests in people and research, you will foster a positive, collaborative culture for the Aquatic Design and Bioengineering team to deliver on existing and new projects, focused on new prototypes and structures to assist the production, harvest and handling of seafood.

Collaborating with colleagues and industry partners this senior role will provide scientific, technical and project management leadership and build capability in prototype engineering for seafood systems.  Working on a variety of theoretical and practical projects, you will further develop creative solutions to answer key science questions and mentor team members in biological design engineering techniques.

What you’ll need

  • A PhD degree in engineering, fisheries/aquaculture technology or natural sciences and/or significant industry experience in the design, development and implementation of novel engineering solutions.
  • Previous experience with live animal systems, or working in the marine environment, are of real advantage.
  • Previous experience in engaging with Māori stakeholders and iwi/hapu (or indigenous communities) groups, are of real advantage.
  • Ability to manage, organise and execute R&D projects related to new gear technology and other research projects.
  • Lead and/or assist with the development of new projects (contestable, commercial, or other internally funded projects).
  • Lead and/or assist with the supervision, management and development of other team members (technical staff, visitors and students).
  • Keen to make a positive difference to NZ’s aquaculture and seafood industries and wants to apply knowledge and skills to develop real-world solutions.
  • A full drivers licence and flexibility to travel within NZ preferred.
