About Us

The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) is based in Wellington, New Zealand. The Institute is New Zealand’s leading independent biomedical research institute, with a focus on breakthrough discoveries in immunology and immunotherapy. We are a growing company with great passion and drive to take our research further.  

The Hugh Green Cytometry Centre (HGCC) supports the Institute’s scientific projects, ranging from immune cell biology, parasitology, vaccine therapies and CAR T-cell research, through to translational immunology. The HGCC provides a key service to multiple laboratories within the Institute, and to a range of external clients around the country and globe. 

 

About the Role

This newly created role reflects the growing needs of the HGCC. You will build and lead a team of data scientists/bioinformaticians, to provide expert advice on data analysis strategies to deliver insights from a range of biological data inputs (genomic, flow Cytometry, Bioimaging). You will be recognised as a strategic authority around data science with technical expertise in cutting edge techniques, defining vision across the organisation and leading innovative data science approaches to make novel discoveries that impact health research.

  • Set a clear vision and strategy for the implementation and uptake of data science, together with the senior staff and CTO.
  • Champion the adoption of best practice in data science.
  • Communicate with senior stakeholders and convince them of the strategic value of applying data science.
  • Manage and develop the skills of the core staff.
  • Represent the HGCC to the international research community.
  • Create a culture of customer excellence for our researchers and external clients.
  • Develop the necessary data science education and training programmes for core facility staff, MIMR scientists and external clients.
  • Publish results and protocols from work within the team

Experience

  • PhD in Biomedical Sciences or Data Science
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in data science
  • Proven leadership experience to inspire, energise and develop a dedicated team.
  • Excellence in developing stakeholder relationships and engagement.

  • Salary from $130,000 - $180,000 depending on experience.

 

This is a full-time, 40-hours-per-week, fixed-term position (3 years) with some flexibility to work from home.
