Starship (Starship Child Health) is New Zealand’s national children’s hospital firmly focused on accelerating world class healthcare for all New Zealand children. Starship both delivers care, and empowers care providers across the country, ensuring our children receive the best possible care. 

The Starship Foundation provides additional funding to Starship enabling it to invest in innovation and research that would otherwise not be possible, including pilot programmes, trials, and specialist teams and personnel. Equitable outcomes are at the heart of the Foundation’s impact programmes which span Child Wellbeing & Whānau Support, Saving & Improving Lives and Prevention. Since 1992 the Foundation has invested more than $150 million into Starship which has made a measurable impact on New Zealand children.

Reporting to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees the Chief Executive Officer will be the face of the Starship Foundation, one of New Zealand’s highest profile charities, and is responsible for its successful leadership and management. The Chief Executive will have overall responsibility for researching, innovating, planning, developing and implementing the Strategic and Operational plans for the Foundation which align with the overall direction developed by the Board in conjunction with the Chief Executive. They will deliver sustainable income streams via working with sponsors, high net worths and family offices, and the Foundation’s many donors to meet agreed fundraising targets.

Accordingly, we are seeking expressions of interest from individuals who have:

  • Proven track record of successful management as a CEO/General Manager, or possibly a senior executive team member of a business 
  • Background working within a highly complex stakeholder environment
  • High levels of gravitas and commerciality to engage seamlessly with corporate sponsors, high net worths, key Starship personnel, health sector participants et al. 
  • Strong ability to lead, coach, and develop diverse teams
  • Experience dealing with the media
  • Demonstrated understanding of Te Ao Māori, including but not limited to, Māori values and tikanga
  • Ideally, previous fundraising experience, either in a not for profit or commercial setting (such as venture capital or private equity) 
  • Ideally had experience in consultation and engagement with iwi, hapu and mana whenua and knowledge of the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
