Chair in Law and Technology

  • Unique opportunity to work across New Zealand’s largest and highest-ranked Law and Business Schools.
  • Situated in the heart of the legal precinct, with strong links to the legal profession and the judiciary, and adjacent to the commercial centre of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university. The Faculty of Business and Economics is New Zealand's largest business school, first to be triple-crown accredited in Australasia, and renowned for its research and teaching excellence. The Faculty of Law is ranked #62 in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject and is the best place to study law in New Zealand based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. It is the largest law school in NZ and has an international reputation for academic excellence. Both faculties also have ecosystems of well-supported Research Centres across the disciplines.

The Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Business and Economics are seeking to appoint an outstanding scholar to the newly established Chair in Law and Technology and Director of the Centre for ICT Law.

Applications are welcomed from those with expertise in growing the emergent field of Law and Technology. Enthusiastic about providing academic leadership to innovative cross-disciplinary research that engages colleagues in Faculties of Science and Arts and with the business community and legal profession, the successful applicant will have expertise in the social impacts of technology, and challenges for regulation. Consequences for business and the legal profession are of particular interest, including areas such as the social impact of cybersecurity, data sovereignty, ethical use of machine learning, and blockchain technology.

Applicants will demonstrate their commitment to excellence in research-informed teaching and learning across both faculties, including the postgraduate Information Governance and Data Ethics programmes and in providing input to the Tech Teaching Hub in the Business School.

The Chair will contribute to supervision, service, and leadership within the University. They will successfully support and mentor students and early career researchers to create a productive research team, and contribute to the growth of doctoral scholars in the area of Law and Technology.

The Chair will be an excellent communicator, able to disseminate research across academic, business and legal communities. Our academics appreciate the ease with which they can access and engage meaningfully with legal practitioners and business leaders to have a positive impact on the NZ economy and society whilst operating collegially within both Faculties, wider university and being supported to remain connected with international research communities.

The appointment will be a continuing joint academic appointment, between both Faculties and will ideally be at professorial level.

The University of Auckland occupies a unique position in New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific. It is New Zealand’s largest university with over 40,000 students and an international centre of learning and academic excellence. Auckland is a vibrant cosmopolitan and rapidly growing city with a population of 1.6m, and is the commercial heart of New Zealand. We have an abundance of natural features including a stunning harbour and accessible coastline, native bush and moderate temperatures, which help us to retain our reputation as one of the best cities in the world in which to live.
