Te Waka Pupuri Pūtea (Te Waka) is an asset holding group wholly owned by Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa (Te Rarawa), consisting of a charitable trust and an organisation with Māori authority status. Their mission is to build a sustainable economic base that supports the vision of Te Rarawa, focusing on economic, social, environmental, and cultural outcomes. With a settlement of historical Treaty claims in 2015, Te Waka is entrusted with protecting, managing, and growing Te Rarawa's commercial assets for inter-generational prosperity. Currently, their portfolio includes interests in fishing, dairy, forestry, property, fibre, and financial assets, totalling in excess of $90 million.

Mō te tūranga | About the Role: 

Te Waka require a dynamic and forward-thinking General Manager who can significantly move the dial towards its goals of safeguarding assets, driving growth, and empowering the wider community of whānau, hapū, and Iwi.

Key responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a robust long-term (five year) investment strategy aligned with Te Rarawa's vision. 
  • Operational Management: Oversee the development of Annual Statements of Intent and budgets, ensuring operational priorities are met, risks are identified, and financial performance is monitored.
  • Business Development: Identify sustainable investment opportunities, pursue joint ventures and collaborations, and diversify revenue sources through innovation.
  • Driving Organisational Performance: Foster an organisational culture consistent with values, recruit and retain high-performing professionals.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Build strong relationships with the Board, Te Rūnanga, marae, hapū, Te Hiku iwi, and other stakeholders, enhancing Te Waka's role and networks.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, accounting standards, commercial practices, and health and safety requirements.

As General Manager, you'll be the driving force behind their strategic direction, injecting innovation and business savvy to ensure that financial stability thrives. Your leadership will not only secure existing revenue streams but also pave the way for new opportunities, propelling Te Rarawa's economic footprint to new heights.

Overseeing the Groups wide and varied investment portfolio will require a breadth of commercial knowledge to ensure respective subsidiaries are meeting organisational objectives and draw on an advanced set of stakeholder and relationship management skills, preferably within a Māori environment.

Whist there is a preference for the role to be based in Kaitāia there is flexibility as to where the role can be located, provided access to the Far North is practical.
